Asking a friend beats reading a review

Asking a friend beats reading a review key visual

an app for asking friends where to eat, sharing places with them, and keeping a wishlist on a map.

( 01 ) Challenge

people trust their friends more than reviews.

the people i spoke to put little faith in review platforms. they'd rather ask friends and family, but had no easy way to find out who'd been where. reviews felt fake or sponsored and were often out of date. leaving one felt pointless.

( 02 ) Research

i interviewed four people.

lack of trust: friends' reviews count for more than strangers'( 01 )
who knows what: i don't know which friends have been where( 02 )
shared experiences: i'd pick the place my friend has been( 03 )
spatial awareness: it comes down to where a place is( 04 )
recommendation friction: sharing a place takes too much effort( 05 )
( 03 ) Persona

julia, 26, marketing analyst.

she likes finding new places with friends and wants to hear from people she trusts. too many options make it hard to choose, and she doesn't think her own reviews add much.

( 04 ) Solution

ask your friends, right in the app.

socially gives friends a place to ask and answer questions about restaurants in any area, share a recommendation in a few taps, and keep a wishlist of places on a map.

( 05 ) Key flows

i designed five flows.

ask friends for a recommendation( 01 )
reply to a friend's question( 02 )
add a restaurant to your map( 03 )
filter the map by cuisine( 04 )
see what friends are saying about a place on your wishlist( 05 )
( 06 ) Testing

i tested it with four people.

i showed people the prototype and asked them to complete a task for each main feature. they liked the look and found the discussion and map tabs easy to move between. the tab icons needed several taps to work, and some people struggled to get back from an expanded card.

( 07 ) What changed

mostly navigation fixes.

coloured tab icons, so you know which screen you're on( 01 )
solid buttons, so text doesn't show through while scrolling( 02 )
'back' instead of 'x' on expanded cards( 03 )
heart pins for wishlist places, and a legend for yours vs friends'( 04 )
bookmarks instead of hearts for saving replies( 05 )
asking friends, pinning a place, reading what they said
